Awareness Does Not Equal Understanding…….

Not only do I want my next President to be able to use a computer, but I expect them to be a regular user of the Internet.

This is not some nicety or boutique campaign issue.  If you don’t use the technology, then you have no understanding of the importance of net neutrality.

It really is that simple.

Sure, John McCain can claim he is aware of the Internet, but I want to see it in action. ( Oh, and btw, having your wife work the computer for you, just doesn’t cut it.  At best, this domestic division of labor comes across as a tad bit sexist–and you certainly don’t need that if you want to continue to woo those uppity Clinton holdouts. )

Come on.

How can McCain appreciate the importance of download speeds if he has never watched a video on YouTube, tried to download a movie from NetFlix,  or hit refresh during an auction on eBay?

Or worst still, would McCain feel even slightly screwed if the the full range of choice offered by an open and free internet, was boiled down to ten proprietary selections offered by his ISP?

I didn’t think so.

More on Obama’s FISA Capitulation…….

Glenn Greenwald takes a clear-eyed look at Obama’s support of the FISA compromise, and as you would expect, the results are not pretty.

What Barack Obama did here was wrong and destructive. He’s supporting a bill that is a full-scale assault on our Constitution and an endorsement of the premise that our laws can be broken by the political and corporate elite whenever the scary specter of The Terrorists can be invoked to justify it. What’s more, as a Constitutional Law Professor, he knows full well what a radical perversion of our Constitution this bill is, and yet he’s supporting it anyway. Anyone who sugarcoats or justifies that is doing a real disservice to their claimed political values and to the truth.

If you are ready to call bull on Obama’s political shenanigans, give his campaign a call at (866) 675-2008, and let them know we expect a whole lot more from a self-described agent of change.

MoveOn To Obama: It’s Time to Keep Your Word and Filibuster Telecom Immunity…….

This is where the rubber meets the road.

Obama needs to know that any back peddling on his promises for real change will result in a huge push back from the democratic wing of the Democratic party.

During the last FISA dust-up, Obama promised to "support a filibuster of any bill that includes retroactive immunity for telecommunications companies."  Now it is time to keep him to his word.

Call Obama’s campaign at (866) 675-2008 and let his staff know that we expect Senator Obama to make good his promise, and block any bill which grants the telecom’s immunity for illegally spying for the Bush Administration.   You can log your call here.

Let’s get busy!

Obama: It’s Me, Not You…….

Hey Barack,

I just wanted to send a quick note, to let you know I think it’s time we start seeing other people.

New relationships are exciting, and it’s easy to get caught up in the moment and forget about the things that matter most.  I understand that.

Plus, communication can be difficult.  I freely admit I could have done a whole lot better and expressed my needs more directly.

However, after your disappointing lack of leadership during the recent House FISA debacle, I feel it is time to clearly state what I expect out of our relationship.

Here is a short list of the change I believe in.

First, I believe the Constitution is the law of the land.  This means the President is not above the law, and cannot order illegal activities and then, after the fact, say they were legal.  This is what Kings do.  We live in a democracy.

I believe in net neutrality because commercial free speech is a sham. Democracy needs an open forum where every citizen has the opportunity to participate in the conversation which ultimately guides our government’s decisions.

Finally, I believe legitimate scientists, with verifiable facts, offer real solutions to the climate crisis, while political posturing and industry green washing guarantee disaster.  This means we must heed Dr. James Hansen’s call to immediately ween the world off of coal-fired power plants, and reduce the concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere to 350ppm.

I think it’s great you are running for President, and I hope to see you from time to time, but I can’t give you any more money, unless, you start to support the real change I believe in.

Instead, I will be hanging out with my new friends at ActBlue, who are working to elect real progressives to Congress.  You can check them out by clicking here.

I hope we can still be friends.

Obama, Telecoms and the Beltway System | Glenn Greenwald…….

Glenn Greenwald picks up on the story published yesterday by DWT:

But it’s critical to keep in mind that Obama is a politician and, like all people, is plagued by significant imperfections. He has largely entrenched himself in, and is dependent upon, the power structure he says he wants to undermine. Uncritical devotion to political leaders, including him, is destructive. Obama needs pressure, criticism, checks, and real scrutiny just like anyone else in power in order to keep him accountable, responsive, and faithful to the principles he claims are the ones driving him.

Pressure of that sort should include demanding that he take meaningful action against this Draconian and lawlessness-enabling bill. This is, after all, a bill which his own party is seeking to pass and justifying their behavior, in part, by claiming that they’re doing it to protect Obama politically from being attacked as Weak on Terrorism. If this bill passes and Obama does nothing to stop it, he’ll bear significant responsibility for its enactment. Here’s his campaign’s phone number: (866) 675-2008 [Dial 6, then 0, on the menu]. I’ll post other contact information as people leave it in comments.

Time for a little tough love.

Call Obama and demand he intervene in this rolling FISA disaster and put a stop to the horrible bill manufactured in the dark by the Bush Administration and their favorite Democratic enablers.  Here is the number again, (866) 675-2008 [Dial 6, then 0, on the menu].

Next, click on over and give Regina Thomas some love with that small donation you were planning on giving to the Obama campaign this month.

Obama Takes a Stand in a Georgia Primary, and Chooses Incumbency Over A Progressive Agenda | Down With Tyranny…….

Just because Obama has clinched the nomination, don’t be fooled into thinking that a progressive agenda will automatically carry the day.

There is still plenty of time for poor choices, back sliding, and politics, as this example from Down With Tyranny clearly illustrates:

Regina, of course, whose candidacy may be harmed by Senator Obama’s endorsement, has been working hard in the Georgia state Senate for the same exact principles and values Obama claims to represent. So while Barrow has publicly bragged about being a rubber stamp for Bush (watch that top video again), Regina has been opposing the war and working hard for the well-being of her constituents. As for the FISA bill Bush and Barrow want so desperately for their campaign donors… Regina and Obama are on the same page. "After reading the bill," she told me this evening, "the first thing I thought was that this was not good for any American citizens– and it seems like a violation of the Fourth Amendment to the Constitution. It doesn’t look like what the Bush Administration wants is just the power to eavesdrop on terrorists– I think we all agree that’s his job– but to also monitor any communication he wants to between any American citizens he wants to and without any lawful judicial supervision."

So, we must continue to organize, developing the infrastructure necessary to pursue a progressive agenda in Washington D.C.

In the case of Obama, this progressive infrastructure can be used to rally support around forward thinking policy proposals, reward political leadership and tenacity, and, equally, hold Obama accountable if he chooses to short change his supporters for political gain.
